The disco-house haven Glitterbox was put in charge of Hï Ibiza's final curtain call on 6 October and the event marked the end of Glitterbox's sixth season in Ibiza and it's third at Hï Ibiza.
Glitterbox was the very first Ibiza party I attended last summer after stepping straight off of the plane as a clueless Ibiza virgin. It still feels like only yesterday I queued outside the glamorous venue in my shimmering two-piece, glitter on my face, ready to see what all the Ibiza hype was about. Glitterbox is a colourful alternative to the formulaic Ibiza parties, where darkness and repetitive beats rule, and it opened my ears to a new way of clubbing. Not only that, but the club itself and the state-of-the-art production is awe-inspiring, and nothing like you will have seen before. Attending Glitterbox again in 2019 has been a blast.
Now, as I finish my second season in Ibiza, ClubTickets take a look back at dancefloor moments from the Glitterbox 2019 finale that shine brightly. Whether the Sunday fiesta was your first, third or thirteenth time grooving under the hundreds of glitter balls, you would have to be a real stick in the mud to not enjoy yourself.
Closing party responsibilities fell on Fatboy slim, Louie Vega, Roger Sanchez, Dimitri From Paris, Purple Disco Machine, Horse Meat Disco, Simon Dunmore, John Morales, Melvo Baptiste, Melon Bomb, Kathy Sledge (live PA) and CeCe Peniston (live PA). Adding a flamboyant element to the Hï Ibiza closing party, the true essence of dance music and disco dominated the venue along with infectious grins and arms in the air - exactly what a closing party should be.
Purple Disco Machine's funky remix of Roberto Surace's award-winning summer smash 'Joys' has become equally as big of a hit, proving that the groove is most definitely still in the heart. Dimitri From Paris has been a champion of the modern disco sound for as long as we can remember and he delivered a masterclass in remixing, easing from his own disco edits to house classics and some chunky new house bangers.
The crowd danced with joy amongst a huge purple confetti shower. 'Free' by Ultra Nate proved to be an epic final track from Louie Vega's uplifting house and disco set as he received huge applause from clubbers before CeCe Penniston took to the stage to perform the absolute belter anthem, 'Finally'. It was a pure singalong fest, and everybody was loving it!
The Wild Corner, otherwise known as the disco toilets, was going off as always. This summer, the world's most famous toilets welcomed some of the biggest names in dance music to the crazy booth in the middle of the room; Honey Dijon, Calvin Harris and Idris Elba to name a few. Fatboy Slim's unexpected appearance back in August sent social media into a frenzy and is one of the main reasons he was to be invited back to headline the finale in the Theatre. On this night, the grooves were courtesy of Melon Bomb.
The Defected and Glitterbox head honcho Simon Dunmore delved deep into his extensive music collection to deliver some amazing closing party golden tunes. The euphoric soundtrack of Glitterbox incorporates disco and house with a sprinkling of classics. It's a sound that has captured the imagination of more than one clubbing generation so a crowd of all ages and backgrounds can come together and share a common dancefloor experience.
Fatboy Slim behind an Ibiza DJ Booth is something to behold as he effortlessly connects with the crowd through his passion for music and infectious enthusiasm. Fatboy Slim took us on a journey packed with soul, thumping basslines, percussion, disco and pure energy and stole the Glitterbox crown for having the stand-out performance of the night.
The dancefloor was still filled until the bitter end as Roger Sanchez joined Fatboy Slim to spin the final tunes. 'Another Chance', 'Praise You' and 'Right Here Right Now' made the loudest crowd reactions. Extraordinary dancers in giant heels were staged around the booth and danced with the sharpest moves and grooves. The costumes and drag queens made for an exciting superclub vibe.
As the clubbers emotionally flooded the venue, it was like a scene from the Pied Piper as we all made our way to the beach for a final Bora Bora sunrise. I do not envy the cleaners of Monday morning's shift as I'm sure a plethora of glitter and confetti can still be found in all corners of the venue. The excitement from the party will be difficult to scrub off, but at least we have enough memories and an extensive playlist of nu-disco, funk and house jams to hopefully last us until the next season.
