The Cream Opening, hosted on June 12th, met the high expectations that only a promoter of the likes of Cream can achieve. After 20 years in the electronic scene in Ibiza, the company has become an institution of Thursday nights at Amnesia. During the season, the developer will be gathering some of the most relevant artists of trance and electro-house on the current scene. This year residents Paul Van Dyk and Above & Beyond will be joined by international artists such as Calvin Harris, Steve Angello, deadmau5, Laidback Luke, Eddie Halliwell, John O'Callaghan and Aly & Fila in a series of mouth watering parties during the season.
Precisely the German trance D, Paul Van Dyk, was the responsible of the first big night of the season supported by Aly & Fila, Simon Patterson and Bryan Kearney taking over the cabin. In the Mixmag Terrace, clubbers enjoyed the latest sounds from the hand of Calvin Harris, Michael Woods, Burns and Sean Hughes at a party where laser projections over the crowd created the perfect atmosphere for the much anticipated opening.
Nick Ferguson (Promoter Cream Ibiza) reveals the origin, history and the key to success of Cream. A promoter whose club in the UK was voted 'Best Nightclub of the last 25 years' by Mixmag. His party in Ibiza also has a very good progression celebrating this season its 20th anniversary. All are celebrations for the British brand that during 16 weeks will present the best artists at the superclub Amnesia.
What is the origin of Cream?
«Cream was launched by James Barton & Darren Hughes (now of ‘We Love’) at the start of the dance music boom in ‘92 as a weekly club night in Liverpool and quickly grew to become one of the biggest and most instantly recognisable electronic music brands in the world, attracting over 3000 people every week who saw it as a lifestyle and not just a source of entertainment. As one of the first successful club brands of its time, it was renowned for its music quality and original line ups which featured regular performances from the likes of Sasha, Chemical Brothers, Andy Weatherall, Sneak, Roger Sanchez, Frankie Knuckles, Pete Tong, David Morales, Carl Cox and Paul Oakenfold who of course became resident for 2 years, a residency that is still talked about to this day. Now Cream has become one of the leading event promoters staging festivals, club events, residencies and tours around the world».
When did Cream start in Ibiza and what was its trajectory?
«Cream first dipped its toe in the Balearic waters in 1994 with one off events at Space & Pacha, followed by a residency in 1995 at Ku (now Privilege). In 1996 Cream returned to the island for a weekly summer residency, this time at Amnesia, which has been our home ever since. This year is our 20th Anniversary and to celebrate we’ve pulled together the biggest roll call of residents the island has ever seen, we’ve also joined forces once again with BBC Radio 1 to host their flagship event at Privilege on Saturday 2nd August as part of the BBC Radio 1 Ibiza weekend. After 20 years, our ethos still remains the same, to deliver the best music, venue, production and atmosphere, something which cream is famous for».
What is new for Cream this season?
«Along with our trusted team of superstar residents like Paul Van Dyk, Above & Beyond, Calvin Harris, Laidback Luke, Eddie Halliwell, John O’Callaghan and Aly & Fila, we have brought back Cream legend Paul Oakenfold for two shows to celebrate our 20th Anniversary year and one of our favorites Eric Prydz to head up the birthday party on Thursday 31st July. We also welcome wonder kid Martin Garrix who will be making his Cream Ibiza debut. Plus we’re excited to have Size records boss Steve Angello as resident this year, whilst freshening up the main room with trance talent like Simon Patterson and Bryan Kearney. Amnesia is also looking great with various improvements and the production will be bigger and better than ever!».
What is the key to Cream Ibiza’s success?
«We have stayed at the top of the game for over twenty years by being consistently strong every week, nurturing artists from grassroots and evolving the line up’s to suit our audience whilst continuing to work with long standing favourites and the trance and house worlds biggest artists. We endeavour to stay competitive and fair on ticket price, and we have developed a passionate and professional island team which mirrors the ethos and quality of the UK head office. Our consistency to deliver to the customers and artists high expectations every time they step into Amnesia on a Thursday night is very important to us and I think its all of this combined that contributes to Cream’s success – here’s to another 20 years!», J
