An Inspiration in Electronic Music and Afro House
Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, artistically known as Black Coffee, is a South African DJ, producer, and entrepreneur who has established himself as a leading figure in electronic music and Afro House worldwide. His career, which began in the mid-2000s, has taken him to some of the most prestigious stages, including Coachella, Ultra Music Festival, and residencies at Hï Ibiza.
Black Coffee has released several albums that blend electronic sounds with African roots. His debut was "Black Coffee" in 2005, followed by "Have Another One" (2007), "Home Brewed" (2009), and the groundbreaking "Africa Rising" (2012), which included a live orchestra performance. His album "Pieces of Me" (2015) achieved great success and was certified platinum in South Africa. In 2021, he released "Subconsciously," which won the Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album, collaborating with renowned artists such as Pharrell Williams, Usher, and David Guetta. One of his most well-known tracks is "Drive," in collaboration with David Guetta and Delilah Montagu. He also contributed to Drake’s "More Life" album, co-producing the hit "Get It Together." His collaborations reflect his ability to integrate global sounds with his rich African heritage.
Black Coffee is the founder of the Soulistic Music label, which has promoted African talents such as Culoe De Song and Zakes Bantwini. This label focuses on innovative and authentic sounds, contributing to the growth of Afro House on the international scene. In 2022, Black Coffee became the first African to win a Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album.
